Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The KC research administration project was launched in October 2006, and currently has six partnering schools collaborating in its development, including The University of Arizona, Cornell University, Indiana University, Michigan State University, Colorado State University, and University of California, Davis. KC is part of the Kuali Foundation's comprehensive suite of software applications - specifically designed to serve the research administration needs of all Carnegie Class institutions. The design of KC is based on the proven functionality of Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Coeus product, which was one of the first cradle-to-grave research administration products on the market and is currently being used by over 40 universities. KC Research Administration System modules currently in development include Proposal/Budget, Awards, Institute/Proposal negotiations, IRB/Human Participants, Conflict of Interest, Report Tracking, Subcontracts, and Animal Care and Use. KC may be implemented as a stand-alone software product or integrated with other Kuali products such as KFS.

What systems will the Research Administration System replace? |
The Research Administration System will eventually replace SPINS (Sponsored Projects Information System). The first component to be replaced will be the PRS tracker, followed by the contract and award logs.
What type of reporting capabilities will the Research Administration System have? |
The Research Administration System will have limited reporting capabilities. Reporting requirements are currently being evaluated and developed as part of the UA's data warehouse replacement project.
Will the Research Administration System be integrated with the Financial System? |
The Research Administration System and the Financials System are based on the same Kuali technology and infrastructure, and therefore have a similar look and feel. Table structures are similar, and both systems utilize the same workflow engine, Kuali Enterprise Workflow (KEW). Future releases of KC and KFS software will also share the Kuali Information Management (KIM) component and award attributes and budget information will feed from KC into KFS as part of KC release 2.0. All of these features will streamline data sharing and information flow between modules.

What is the difference between Kuali Coeus and KFS' Contracts and Grants component? |
The Contracts and Grants component within KFS includes a limited internal routing form and budget, but the functionality is not as robust as KC. KC has a larger budget builder, a Grants.gov system-to-system interface, and additional contract management and risk/compliance modules. UA will utilize KC as its primary research administration system.
